Lidl opens on the Boulevard

Customers file into Lidl soon after it opened.

Lidl held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 2 for a new supermarket at 9175 Roosevelt Blvd., in the Northeast Shopping Center.

Crews demolished several structures, including a Bally Total Fitness that sat vacant since its 2011 closing, to make room for the supermarket and parking lot.

Customers braved the cold to stand in line waiting for store manager Nicole Hoffman to cut the ribbon at 7:40 a.m. A woman named Angelina, who arrived at 6 a.m., was first in line and received a $100 gift card and flowers.

Lidl officials cut the ribbon outside the new store.

The first 100 customers received gift cards valued from $5 to $100, and there were giveaways, a DJ and a raffle for a $500 gift card.

This is the second Lidl (rhymes with needle) in Philadelphia. The other is at 2290 E. Butler St. in Port Richmond. ••
